After checking with our new neighbors we learned that the average wait for a BSNL connection in the new house ranges from 30 – 45 days.
The humans were flummoxed. At this rate, they'd be forced to make civil conversation with each other instead of retreating to their respective corners with their laptops. Grandpa was duly requested to use his clout, and after a short wait of five working days, the humans were reconnected to the virtual world.
The question du jour directed at my humans is “Settled aa?” Kind neighbors want to know if they need help, relatives visit with fresh vegetables and food, and the doorbell rings ever so often with strangers asking, "Madam, driver beka? Maid beka? Cook beka?"
Perhaps it’s the glorious airconditioned weather in Bangalore, or the squeaky-clean community they now live in, or the new townhouse they moved into with lizards outside the house as opposed to inside, or the fact that they moved countries exactly a year ago … whatever the reason, this time mom has unpacked all 143 cartons and is trying to turn her house into a home.
“We have too much stuff,” frowns dad, referring to anything non-electronic. “Let’s get rid of half the things,” he proposes, as mom frantically clambers to rescue her brass Ganeshas, ceramic vases, papier-mâché knick-knacks and terracotta figurines from a cardboard box marked “Trash.”
For the first time, the humans find themselves living inside a gated community lined with barbed wire fencing separating them from the nearby halli residents. Uniformed security guards patrol the streets day and night with nothing to do other than crack their knuckles or adjust their black caps.
“They should get Dobermans instead,” suggests mom, as she spies the security guard on her street picking his ear or checking out his reflection in a parked car.
Where before mom would nag the children to “go outside and play,” she now begs them to come home at least during meal times. With a swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts on site, minimal traffic and lots of company, the children prefer to spend time playing outdoors or in friends’ homes.
“Only young people living here,” observed grandma as she walked around the complex, “young” referring to anybody below the age of 50.
At night in bed, the family listens to the thunderclouds rolling outside and watches the palm trees swaying in the breeze. “Do you guys like it here?” asks mom, in between swatting tenacious mosquitoes.
“It’s cool,” says Anu, which probably translates as superlative in tween vocabulary.
Perhaps the family's feelings can best be summed up by its youngest member who declares, "I want to stay in Bangalore, I never want to go back to India!”

Nice!! Getting the best of both worlds I see. Congrats :) Will be leaving for Bangalore myself (with kids) tomorrow!

hmmm ... have you brushed up on your kannada, or do you really have to go to tbose lengths to get away from those geckos? are the barbed wires electrified? ;-)
- s.b.
ps: halli = lizard (also) in kannada
heh, that's awesome to hear. Yes, stay in Blore, don't go back to India. :-)
Glad you like B'lore. It remains one of my favorite cities, though it's almost 10 years since we left it!
Have fun!

At this point, mom likes this housing community more than she likes the city. The rest of Bangalore seems no different from "India" - people spit, urinate, throw garbage and try to kill themselves on the streets.
s.b., halli has a double meaning, is it? I think that's unfair to the village residents.
Sounds lovely!!
I thought halli (village) and halli (lizard) have different pronunciations. halli(lizard) is like palli in tamil replaced by "h" in the beginning. Halli (viilage) is pronounced like tiruchira"palli".
Terri, thought your mom was brave to move to Chennai with its hostile weather and sort of traditional outlook directly from the US. I am glad that Bangalore is giving your family a happier sense of living in India. It would be good for mom to not worry about spitting, urinating outside in the city . There is no place in India that would be free of those behaviors!
Glad that kids are having a great time too! That makes it even sweeter for mom, i guess!

Yay. So, welcome home, finally?
Lakshmi, not so fast ;)
Shree, kids are occupied and have friends. I have a library and a Bigflix subscription. A well-paying job would make the deal sweeter.
wordjunkie, the community is, indeed, lovely.
Welcome! I am impressed with your unpacking abilities, I still have boxes and suitcases whose contents are anyone's guess. Yes, I could open them and check, but I like the mystery.
BigFlix, eh? We've been using seventymm and I'm not that happy with them.
-DS
As you said outside is no different... best of luck with the Lizards..
..and welcome to Bengaluru
TM, about your comment above " ... A well-paying job would make the deal sweeter." - I think it would leave you with less time for the library and BigFlix. I'm thinking of quitting so I can devote more time to the library :)
-DS
Nice pun on the title! Paid attention to it only when i came by the second time.
- Shree
DS, mom didn't unpack half her stuff in Chennai since she couldn't wait to leave. Also, this time she's trying to keep with the Joneses (or are they Mehras/Singhs/Raos/Koshis?)
Darling, quit your job and we'll start a book club.
Vijay, when they can do such a superlative job inside the community, why can't they do the same outside?
There's a lizard in the kitchen and mom is beginning to freak out because she can't spot it. Droppings everywhere.
Shree, thanks.
heh, a social scientist could deconstruct that last statement for hours! congrats on the move and the unpacking and hope to see you soon!
HaHa do you remember you wanting trolls. Keep writing these posts on how Bangalore is better than Chennai, they will find you soon enough :)
such as these...

Its crazy world out there
TM, looks like you are definitely liking Bangalore better :) Am glad the kids are having fun too!
Sands, it's a like-minded crowd. Imagine if we were all living in the same complex and met people we knew every time we stepped out of our houses?
WA, Chennai has its charms, I suppose. Maybe 10 months isn't enough to find them.
ra, when's the India trip planned?
Ideally, Terri, you have a few fans (at least one) that love Chennai, faults and all. So, could we, umm..mmm...keep the chennai bashing to a minimum? Even if such bashing might not attract trolls (we chennai-lovers are very mild mannered and sweet), it might lead to a few unnecessary gulps?
Lakshmi, I wouldn't say an unkind word about the birthplace of Grand Snacks & Sweets :)
:) Hope you all enjoy Bangalore, sounds lovely. Infact it sounds cool
143 boxes... All unpacked. When I moved I think husband and I might have thrown a few boxes just to reduce unpacking effort...
Hope you enjoy Bangalore. I have spent some lovely vacations there.
August I think. And again in December hopefully.
Ra, I will be there in Aug too. Well, there as in Chennai, not Bangalore tho.
Except for the traffic and the hallis, bangalore is fantastic. Have a good time :)
WA, whatever Bangalore lacks in other areas it makes up for in terms of weather.
sOP, there's so much stuff one can live without, right?
ra, so much international travel. Were it not for the cramped airplane rides over long distances, I'd envy you.
Meira, I'll bet even cool places like Kashmir and Kulu-Manali have hallis. There seems to be no escaping them.
Oh Terri I spent part of my teen years not far from Bangalore, at Hosur, my parents were so disappointed with the Govt Girls Hr sec school in Hosur that they packed me off to boarding school. Not that it did me much good. I was then hoping to go to college at Bangalore but my mum freaked out at the youth culture in Bangalore and packed me off to Grandparents house in Chennai. Oh yeah I was just about to say, hence I do know the weather there and I think the city is lovely. Maybe I should visit the school and the malai koil in Hosur this trip. Hmmm
wa:
"the malai koil in Hosur"
is it maalai koil, malaai koil or malaaika (a la khushboo) koil? or is my li'l tamil too bad and there is some totally different meaning?
- s.b.
s.b., you've changed hill temple to garland temple, cream temple and (sounds Muslim) temple.
Wait, u found a modern halli without a palli, awesome.
Regarding madras,I love the city. But have rarely seen any non-tamilnadu resident like the city. wonder why.
-sachita
terri:
whoops, i forgot that 'malai' - i think 'f' is the appropriate grade in tamil for me :-).
temple muslim sounding only, really is 100% hindu one only.
sachita:
scroll up - wa has generously provided a couple of links. if you have the patience, the answers (and more) are all there. you can opt to be either priya's fan #3 or priya's enemy #1! ;-)
- s.b.
Sachita, ha, not so fast! After I gushed about a lizard-free house, I found droppings in the laundry room the next morning, and nobody's been able to get rid of an extremely ugly lizard from my house. I want to move to Alaska.
s.b., it's one thing to name idlis after a person and quite another to build a temple and pray to her. Either Hindus are crazy or the human population is.
terri:
building temples for a girl is not a hindu copyright.
- s.b.
ha!
how perfect though...plush environs with the comfort and convenience of maid, cook, driver....i would never move!
My reporter friends insist that there is NO TEMPLE for Khush anywhere. Has anybody ever seen it?
that temple is just a hut with a photo of kushboo inside. rediff once published a photo of it.
-Sachita
Ha, the youngest is clearly my best friend who always said the same thing.
Didn't Naghma or somebody else get a temple too? I think Khushboo's got torn down after she said Tamizh-penn people were people too and quite enjoyed sex, sometimes without the blessings of a priest.
Just want to add that I saw kushboo in shopping in London a few years ago, she looked nice enough but I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. Tamil men are very odd indeed.
WA, early morning Boat Club walkers say the same thing.
Amrita, does Amitabh or Shahrukh have a temple as well or are all weirdos only living down south?
chakli, it only sounds better on paper. Household help = hassle.
s.b., I learn something new everyday.
Whatever you do, don't get airtel- major fraud company. Even if you do, go for the unlimited d/l connection- they screw you with false data, otherwise. (been there, done that).
Glad to know you are finally "settled". House hunting in blr is a pain in the.. er.. neck.
