Another weekend has passed, and our house is the only one in the neighborhood, perhaps in the entire city, with the Christmas lights still intact.
For some reason, this is bothering mom, even though she had nothing to do with actually installing the lights.
At first, mom tried telepathy. She concentrated on the bald spot on dad’s head and glared long and hard all day, hoping to somehow transfer her thoughts and motivate him off the couch.
She then tried to lead by practice, by quietly putting away the Christmas ornaments and the wreath.
Next, she tried subtlety. “You know, the kids were just saying they would love to help you take down the lights.”
When nothing worked and the days passed, she had no choice but to try a combination of all methods, including some blunt reminders, “Hello, the lights are still up!”
You’d think instead of expending so much mental effort, it might be easier for mom to just whip out the ladder and take down the darned lights herself.
She could. But why bother? She has a reputation to maintain after all.

PS:Is the Kite Runner any good?
G, The Kite Runner is wonderful! It has some disturbing moments, but I absolutely loved the author's style. I would absolutely recommend it.
i like your mom...nothing against anybody else...but she is cute...
Aw, thanks, 1$. That makes two of us. (Three, if you count mom.)
“Hello, the lights are still up!”
one would have thought that dad, being a dad, would have done the right thing, and responded with a ... pdrumrolls please] "yes, so they are!"

s.b., when at fault, dad prefers to take the pretend-I-didn't-hear-that route.
