Kaho Na Pyar Hai

In case you didn’t get the memo, or don't care, like dad, Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. Mom’s female co-workers are in such a to-do that you’d think they all get serenaded and laid on only an annual basis.

“Ah, love!” thinks mom, wistfully, as she eyes the red and pink hearts taped on cubicle walls and the pink beanie babies gathering dust on computer monitors. The only Valentines she’ll receive will be from her kids, and that too courtesy their teachers.

“You know, it’s just a commercial holiday,” declared dad impatiently, when she broached him on the subject years ago, after waiting all day for some kind of acknowledgement on Feb. 14. “Hallmark invented it to increase sales,” he continued, as though mom gave a hoot about the historical information.

The first time dad gave her flowers was for their first-month anniversary. Dad was home later than usual that day, but he arrived clutching a bouquet of red roses and sporting an embarrassed grin. “Awww, you shouldn’t have,” blushed mom, immediately forgiving him his tardiness.

Unfortunately for her, dad took the statement quite literally. So literally, in fact, that mom hasn’t seen any flowers from him since (not counting that bouquet he sent on their 7th anniversary when she was visiting her relatives in New Jersey – a strategic move, mom suspects, designed more to impress his in-laws than her).

Things have reached a point where if she wants flowers mom drives to the local Costco and buys them herself. She loudly fusses whenever Kuki picks her a crushed bougainvillea from the roadside, hoping dad will get the reference, but the man continues to remain romantically challenged and selectively deaf.

Studies have shown that couples that have been together a number of years can read each other's thoughts and complete each other's sentences. Obviously, this pair hasn't reached that milestone yet.

So, if any of you have simple tips or subtle suggestions mom could use to score herself a serenade this Valentine's Day / birthday / anniversary / amavasya / International Women's Day, etc., do let her know.

She can then take it from there.

Hi terri,
I thought that dad read this blog - so unless he is english challenged, mom should be in for a surprise. Mom surely is dropping 'subtle' hints ;). LOL

i7, glad you caught on.

visitor, I doubt dad reads this blog. He doesn't even have the patience to read wordy Hallmark greeting cards completely.

Terry, would mom decorating the house with red hearts and balloons help? Perhaps hearty bedspread on 13th? Heart shaped dosas?

Although, heart of hearts (pun unintended), I agree with dad.

martian studies have shown that while martians are very poor at mind reading, venutians more than make up for it by reading minds, reading outside the minds, reading between the minds, reading all around minds etc. etc.

btw, if you haven't yet done so, when you have time (what with mom being on the commuter's schedule and all), check out that movie with jennifer aniston and what's his name (vince vaughn?) - "the break-up" or something like that. there is a good (obligatory?)reference to martians and flowers - or lack thereof - in that movie.

Hi Terri & Terri's mom,

First time here. Nice blog you have and writing style is good too. Herez a idea. Ask mom to tell dad that she bought something really good for dad and itz going to be a big surprise. I use it as a reminder of what is comingup. I always shop for something nice(not so expensive) and hubby will feel embarrased if he didn't get me back anything. Let me know whether this technique worked.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

-Nandini.

Lovely post.. Came here through a link that was pasted on my blog...

I can relate to your Dad's predicament..if he buys flowers now the question is "Why after all this time?"... to top all, my aniversary falls a day before Valentines Day.. so go figure...

lakshmi, heart-shaped dosais? Is that the latest in Chennai this Valentine's Day?

s.b., so what you're saying is that women are the smarter and superior sex because they can read minds? I agree wholeheartedly :)

Nandini, thanks. The embarrassment technique has been tried and tested years ago, but to no avail.

vijay, thanks. You're right. If dad does something even remotely romantic now, mom might suspect him of having an affair. The poor guy is stuck in a no-win situation.

terri: tell your mom that she and dad makes for whats called a "comfort couple". CC's no longer celebrates V days and amavasyas; only hikes and kids smart scores.
