Instead of drawing on the walls, Kuki’s favorite game these days is to pair her dolls and make sure they kiss each other for a full 4.5 minutes with their heads tilted at an angle.
And so we have anomalies like Fairytopia Barbie locking lips with Bitty Baby, and Dora’s locks entangling with Indian Barbie’s nose ring.
Kuki watches indulgently and goads her dolls by mouthing dialogues such as, “Do you want to be my boyfriend or my girlfriend? … Then hold my hand like this … OK, let’s kiss … Hey, you can’t be Ariel’s prince, you have to stay with Aurora! … I loooooove you!”
Mom isn’t quite sure whether to enjoy the show or bring her four-year-old back to reality by making her work on math concepts instead.
Last week, after listening to one too many declarations of love between a nose-less Mr. Potato Head and a tatty Winnie the Pooh, mom finally asked Kuki, “How come your dolls are always kissing each other?”
“'Coz they wanna,” retorted Kuki, shooting mom a you-got-a-problem-with-that? look.
“Yeah, but … um … er …,” stuttered mom, anticipating another royal snub, “don’t you think they’re kissing a lot? Look at Appa and me," she justified. "We don’t kiss each other all the time.”
“That’s ‘coz you guys are married,” responded Kuki, picking up her dolls and leaving the room.
The child is obviously not using her parents as role models. Way to go, kiddo!

kids! :)
Ah, so Kuki is her mother's daughter :D Hee hee
terri:
"retorted Kuki, shooting mom a you-got-a-problem-with-that? look."
having been on the receiving end of many such looks, i know exactly what you are talking about.
i wonder if kuki is that precocious or am i in for similar funny business in another (+/-) year!
yearning for the days of ... घूँघट में गुड़िया को आती है लाज [source: chandaa hai too ...].
sundar (i know you are reading :-):
is this par for the course, or are you (s)miles ahead of dad (or me) on this pda thingy?
- s.b.
p.s.: terri, the only reason these hindi songs are cropping up in my comment is because someone in your family sometime back referred to a hindi song on some blog, somewhere! :-) in other words, i am pretty sure mom will get it.
Hehehe! At least she didn't say it's coz you and her appa are boring... That's for the teenage years I guess! ;0
broom, puppies are easier to manage.
amrita, very much so, thank goodness! Mom doesn't have a head for math either.
s.b., it's not fait that only we go through the precocious phase. So we wish the same on you too. And no, we didn't get the song reference.
muser, I think that's what she meant to say, but couldn't remember the word "boring." Can't blame the poor kid, though.
I am reading.. this calls for a little book to be written..
are people in the mid thirties to forties with 4-5 year olds that symptomatic of the lack of pda that even the little ones link this to being married?
the other day she said "daddy, I dont eat meat because we are Indian, right?" and I said "no. you dont eat meat because no one in our house eats meat"..
I hope I dont get questions like "Daddy, we dont kiss because we are Indian right?"
:)
"Daddy, we dont kiss because we are Indian right?"
Who said that?
It ought to be:
"Daddy, we dont kissin public because we are Indian right?"
ROFL! She's got the whole being married thing down pat!
On a serious note, should mom nip this game in the bud (not sure how to do that) or should she allow the little one's imagination to run wild? Does anybody know if this is just a phase that kids grow out of?
Terri,
Damn! Kids have such clear perspective of life and we don't :)
They know:
1. There is no romance when you have kids!
2. They know how to mark territory! "Hey you can't be Ariel's prince"
I think, at some level, the kid is using her parents as a role model :)
How to bring her back to Math is a difficult issue!
Speaking as somebody who has absolutely zero kids and would like to keep it that way for the foreseeable future - I say she'll grow out of it. Either that or Dad will get the message. One of two things :D
Terri, I think this train has left the station. But maybe you can introduce some non-fairytale characters in her life (who do more than smooch all the time)? More Dora the Adventurer? Bob the Builder? Thomas the Engine? I'd better do the same too. Hide the freakin princess books!
muser, we tried and are trying, but with an older sibling around, she ends up watching whatever he does. And all her friends are into Disney princesses, which is where she's getting her kissing concepts from.
amrita, I think her growing out of it is more probable.
pilgrim, I recommend puppies to you too.
visitor, you mean things are different in private?
pilgrim:
"How to bring her back to Math is a difficult issue"
the question is which of the two is correct?
-> 1 + 1 = 2 + 0
-> 1 + 1 = 4 (5, if terri cannot be left out and ... counting???)
does it all not depend on which lesson mom wants to impart - pure maths or maths w/ biology?
terri:
"And no, we didn't get the song reference. "
i provided a link to the song and also a quote from it. point being that 'hamaare zamaane men' (in our times), even those dolls had a sense of propriety - veiled dolls that were bashful even as they were "getting married"!
