It was the $5 off coupon that compelled mom to deviate from routine one afternoon and shop at the other grocery store instead of her regular haunt.
She filled her cart with all manner of provisions and proceeded to the checkout lane to patiently wait her turn.
By the time she reached the cash register, her nose buried in a magazine, mom had learned that gorgeous Vanessa Williams doesn’t really diet and follows a soap and water beauty regimen.
What a coincidence! So does mom, but it’s hard to mistake her for a beauty queen.
As she unloaded her purchases onto the belt, mom hesitated for a second and looked around before placing a pack of prophylactics (on sale for half-price) on the counter.
Memories of bumping into a girlfriend with a pregnancy test kit in hand came flooding back, and not wanting a repeat scene, mom took care to casually conceal the box by sandwiching it between two gallons of milk.
Digging through the dregs of her purse for her debit card, mom reached the cashier, ready to greet the person with a polite plastic smile in place.
The cashier turned toward mom and caused her heart to momentarily leap out of its cavity.
Of all people, it was the desi uncle she occasionally bumped into at parties.
“Hello, how are you?” he smiled, running her buttermilk over the scanner.
“Er … fine,” mumbled mom, belying her current state of anxiety. She wondered if it was too late to dive across the conveyor belt and shove the offending pack into the Kit Kat bars lining the aisle.
“Did you find everything all right?” asked uncle genially, offering mom a perfect opening into a conversation.
On any given day, mom would’ve inquired about his family and made polite small talk about the buy one get one free deal on russet potatoes.
That day, however, she could only watch mutely as the cause of her consternation steadily made its way toward uncleji with every successive beep.
Wanting to bury her face in a paper or plastic bag (she wasn't choosy), mom pretended to be VERY busy rifling through her purse for her car keys.
“Would you like any stamps or ice with that?” inquired uncle, unaware that mom was in no mood to prolong the transaction.
Conscious of the flush spreading across her face, she picked up her purchases and all but ran out of the store as fast as she could.
Later, as she unloaded the groceries at home, the $5 off coupon fluttered to the floor, crumpled and unused.
"I wonder what uncle’s schedule is," thought mom, smoothening out the edges and squinting to read the coupon's expiry date.
Somewhere in the back of her mind she idly wondered if the rubbers would still be on sale.

Admit it Terri. The only reason mom forgot the coupon was that as soon as she saw uncleji and her pack of rubber together her brain went into an overdrive putting words and phrases together to form this marvelous blog entry. Yes?
lakshmi, mom had no ulterior motives when she went shopping. Wonder what your naadar would say if you asked him for a 12-pack.
That's a good one! I am also starting to see desis manning counters at grocery stores and Home Depots.
lekhni, thank you for the mention on DP. I really liked your entry on the Bhopal gas tragedy.
lakshmi:
it's all your fault. ever since you've fallen over yourself getting terri to write a post, mom's been grasping for straws (among other things).
terri:
btw, tell mom not to worry. your store grand-uncle called - he was happy that your dad was keeping up with his marriage vows! ;-)

LOL! moral of the story: Watch out for the sales person at the counter before you stand in the line.
One presumes that the said merchandise were, ahem, of the "plain-vanilla" variety (no pun intended), rather than the more esoteric varieties available. Those would have really made Uncleji's eyebrows meet his hairline.
that was one funny post terri!
I can totally see why the e-condoms are a big hit..
:)
AHAHAHAHAH!!! Terri love, next time buy the biggest pack available. If uncle ji is going to gossip, at least he'll make it sound really good. dad will thank you.
"next time buy the biggest pack available."
whenever you buy a piece of merchandise with a $ coupon, for the most bang for the buck (pun? what pun?), it is advisable to buy the smallest pack and apply the coupon against it (if it is still valid) :-).

s.b., marriage vows?!! Why this one-track mind? The purchase could've been for a *cough cough* art project.
anitha, true.
bpsk, the flavored ones weren't on sale.
sundar, you can order these things online? Do you have to buy in bulk? The info. might come in handy for my next *cough* art project.
indie, you mean an extra-large pack? Are you referring to size or quantity or both?
s.b., sounds like you have some experience in this area.
terri:
keeping spouse happy (and helping spouse with art work) is part of the marriage vows!
yup, i have some experience using coupons.
talk about one-track minds!!!
- s.b.
:-))
LOL! Don't know what world i have been living in. Didn't realize there were coupons for condoms.
Well, this is good incentive for mom and dad to use up the current packet before the coupon expiry date.
lol! that was a hilarious post! :)
pw, rads, thanks.
chakli, the coupon wasn't product-specific. And you're not alone, I still don't know what e-condoms are.
s.b., gien your range of experience, maybe you know what they are.
Late reply - Nadar does not stock them, being a law-abiding, pro-pro creationist! And buying art-aids is not exactly my end of the marriage vow ! ;)
s.b. Don't we all love it when mom grasps for straws and other things - mainly other things?
mom, how about self checkout on "such" times?
