Were it an ordinary day, being presented with a bouquet of red roses and a box of Ferrero Rochers would have had her wondering, “What’s he done now?”
But when the above items arrived on her wedding anniversary last week, mom blushed like the bride she had been 13 years ago, her heart hammering the way it did when dad first laid eyes on her.
She had barely recovered from his phone call that morning wishing her a happy anniversary. “Wow, you remembered?” was her first thought as she said, “Thank you, same to you,” even though he has never forgotten once in all their years together.
“What’s Appa going to give you?” the little one wanted to know the previous day.
“Probably nothing, as usual,” thought mom, conveniently forgetting their tacit agreement of not exchanging presents for birthdays or anniversaries. Instead, she hugged her child close to her and said, “Appa isn’t even here. Besides, I don’t need anything (true!); I have everything I need (very true!).”
“Well, I want more jewelry, another handbag, pink shoes, a Barbie set …” began Kuki, counting items off on her fingers.
Two hours after dad’s phone call, a dumbfounded mom stood by the front gate signing for a special delivery of red roses and a box of candy. There was no need for grandma to ask who the flowers were from - the look on mom’s face said it all.
“Ooh, roses!” squealed Kuki as soon as she spotted the buds on the dining table. “Does this mean Appa loves you very much, Amma?”
I don’t know … he’s never said anything.

aaaawwww congratulations
Happy anniversary, belated, and I am sure this was the best anniversary gift you can ever get.
wa, thanks.
lakshmi, a better gift would have been to see him at the door instead.
Hope you see him at the door soon! Happy Anniversary to both of you!
awwwww!!!! happy belated anniversary to mom! look at the bright side, she can do some quality backseat driving this time (or just ask him to take a taxi home from the airport!)
- s.b.
mg, shouldn't be too long now, I hope.
s.b., are you kidding? Mom isn't about to do any backseat driving at midnight. And why take a cab when grandpa can be roused from slumber to pick up at the airport?
Maybe we males do have feelings and kinda communicate in a different way?? Ha..BTW, have been lurking around for a while and find your writings too good.
I take my hat off on your move back to India, good luck and keep the posts coming.Do you personally think that moving back made your life any better?
s
s, why, thank you! We're still struggling to find out why we moved to India. It's only when we see our parents bonding with our children that we wonder why we're even questioning our motives to move back.
Terri, Extremely sweet of Dad, no?
-Sachita
Sachita, we're still reeling from the after-effects. Do you know how many calories one Ferrero Rocher contains?
forget the calories babes - lap it up :)
good for you and stop being so hard to please ;-) i bet if he was at the door, you'd say "if he had a bouquet of red roses in his hand it would have been even better!"
do call some time and dont wait until someone's birthday :)
A
Dad obviously doesn't think mom needs to count calories otherwise he wouldn't have sent her ferrero rochers, would he? Plus mumbai girl's description of her seems to confirm that... so mom, enjoy!! Hope she saved one for you, Ter, if you're allowed to eat chocolates i.e.
P.S. Happy anniversary!
ara, can you imagine how boring dad's life would be if he had an all-sacrificing, simpering film heroine sort as a wife? Unless of course it were Mallika Sherawat.
muser, no chocolates for me. Mom's greedy and doesn't share.
70, I can just say these numbers of the top of my head.
But they are mere numbers to be ignored on occasions such as these. :)
Happy Annniversary.
-Sachita
Ps: Glad to have Time-Pass back.
sachita, is 70 the number of years my humans have been married in dog years?
Awwwww.... you should totes kidnap him for an illicit weekend in return. Let's see if he says anything then!
As if red roses and choclates( yum!) don't say "I love you" loud and clear! And maybe there's more to come in the way of hugs....and um other gestures when Dad comes home:-)
Belated happy anniversary Terri's mom. Dad was sharing dinner with us last week and we didn't know it was his anniversary:( Well, enjoy the roses and the lovely chocolate.
sands, thank you, but the anniversary had already passed when he met you.
deepa, can't wait ;)
am, an illicit weekend is tops on my wishlist. You've heard about mothers who feel guilty about leaving their children behind and going on vacation, right? Well, in our case, we have a dad.
You have an award waiting for you at my blog for being such an entertaining blogging dog, Ter! Congratulations and hugs!
Belated Happy anniversary! I would have thought he would send Malli poo and halwa:), desi style! - Vij
terri:
"am, an illicit weekend is tops on my wishlist. You've heard about mothers who feel guilty about leaving their children behind and going on vacation, right? Well, in our case, we have a dad."
i am throughly confused.
a) do you mean to say that dad is on vacation and feeling guilty for leaving kids behind?
b) do you mean that dad would treat an illicit weekend as time away from kids and feel guilty?
c) or do you just have a dad who is not guilty? period.
- s.b.
s.b., why the confusion? I thought it was pretty clear. In either case, an illicit weekend ain't happening :(
Vij, is this what you guys did when you were here?!!
muser, thanks and kisses!
"It's only when we see our parents bonding with our children that we wonder why we're even questioning our motives to move back." Well that says it all, It still is not an incentive for a bachelor like myself to move back down. Well, Thank you for your response, It was just that after moving out for five years , I am in a jinx whether or not it was a good idea to come back right now.
I guess I can see India through your eyes till then.....
S
Wow! Appa has set himself a very high bar for next year.
Belated anniversary greetings, Terri's mom and dad!!
Terri - dont stand for any nonsense! Take charge! Pull on your spandex and your silken mask and steal him away into the dungeon of love... I'm thinking whips, chains, mink lined handcuffs! Things that will shock all the paatis!
Man, your imaginary love life as imagined by me is quite something. I'm now jealous.
